Buddha Dordenma - Review

Faith manifests itself in the form of a large watchful guardian in Bhutan – standing tall at a whopping 51.5 meters, cast in bronze and gilded in gold, this is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Seated regally upon a large meditation hall, this Shakyamuni Buddha structure is a work in progress, the location of which used to be the ruins of Kuensel Phodrang, the palace of Sherab Wangchuck, the thirteenth Desi Druk.

Facing the southern approach to Thimphu, looking out over the Changzamthok district, this structure offers an unparalleled view of the valley below. Curiously, it houses 125,000 smaller Buddha statues have been placed within it, 100,000 8 inch tall ones and 25,000 12 inch tall ones respectively, which are similarly made of bronze and gilded with gold. The statue, interestingly, is said to fulfill an ancient prophecy dating back to the 8th century A.D.Discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa (Religious Treasure Discoverer),it is said to exude an energy of peace and happiness to the entire world.

Still a work in progress, the Buddha Dordenma statue is the idyllic blend of beauty and spirituality. To the north side of Thimphu, there is also the Bhutan Broadcasting Service or BBS TV tower, located even higher up, from where the view of the Thimphu valley is even more arresting.

  • What a wonderful place. This place was created recently and the view from the place is very beautiful. The Buddha Statue is very big and nicely built. Very nice infrastructure and it is located near the Thimphu city only. Photographers can click wonderful landscape pictures from here. I strongly recommend this place if you are at Thimphu.

  • A must visit place in Thimphu. Probably one of the tallest statue of Buddha in world. Sitting Buddha. Try to visit this place in morning hours to enjoy more. Buses and vehicles goes up to top and persons from any age can easily go.

  • you get a lovely view of the area from up here and its even more beautiful during the sunset. the view of the valley from up here looks brilliant and the weather is windy and cool. the Fog sets in later on and early on in the morning. this place is very close to the city which makes it a brilliant quick morning or evening getaway from the bustling city life.

  • Largest bronze statue of Lord Buddha in world. Located on top of mountain near Thimphu. Great view of valley and snow clad mountains. Very serene and peaceful in the temple. Work was still under progress when I visited in Mar 18. Must visit site.

  • Probably one of the best tourist sights in the capital. Took my Thai teacher there and she absolutely loved it! Be careful of the cold and wild animals I’ve heard of before, not sure though. And to my countrymen, stop doing funny business out here! It’s Buddha’s area and keep it serene and stop the monkey business!
