Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple - Review
2000 years old, the Sree Janardhan Swamy Temple is a favorite tourist spot for its sheer history. The temple faces the Papanasam beach which adds to its spiritual ambience. The main Idol of the temple is of Vishnu’s avatar- Janardhana Swamy.
Do notice the conical Copper dome and square shaped pavilion with exquisite wooden carvings of the Navgrahas (9 planets). An ancient inscription dating back to 1252 is seen here! The main festival of Arattu in March/ April is a highlight of the temple and is a must-see during the season. The temple is loved for its architecture, design, and layout.

Heavenly experience. Good old temple with Rich traditions. Sea shore is walkable.
Traditional Vishnu Temple with Siva Idol. Famous for post creamation rituals for departed souls.
One of the Abhimana sthalangal of Mahavishnu. Presiding Lord is Janardhana swami. Many other dieties are found in the temples. Foreigners and non Hindus are allowed inside this Government/Travacore Devasom Board controlled temple. Araat is the main festival held in around April where the lord is taken on procession on elephant. The temple pond has medicinal values. There is a natural freshwater source for drinking , bath and wash opening into the pond . This spring acts as a constant water source for the pond as well as keeping the water clean by its regular uninterupted water flow. Varkala has a excellent beach called Papanasam beach which is considered very holy and Bali Dharpanam day is very auspcious here. The cliff and beach are a fabulos sight attracting tourists from all over the world.
