The Attukal Temple is a part of the Guinness book of World Records for the largest women gathering festival in the world and is popular for its annual ‘Pongal’ festival which is unique as the rituals are don’t only by women.
Legends tell the story of the Goddess Bhagwathy appearing in front of an old man of a reputable family as a small girl. The man helped the small girl cross the river in which he was bathing and offered to take her to his home. The girl however vanished and reappeared in his dream as the Goddess to tell him the exact location (marked by three lines on the ground) where her temple should be constructed.
The man found the place and built the temple which was reconstructed by the local devotees over time.
Today Pongal is the highlight festival here when the ‘pongal’ dish- jiggery, rice and coconut porridge is offered to the Goddess. The temple is admired for its true traditional architecture, design and the beautiful Idol of the Goddess.
