One of Tivoli’s significant historical symbols is the Rocca Pia that stands quite close to Piazza Garibaldi. The castle has been designed by Pope Pius II Piccolomini in the year 1461 and was built on the top of the hill with the main aim of evading any kind of popular uprisings and to have control from above over the entire city. The structure of the fortress is a square one and has four towers around it of varied heights. Since the early 19th century, it was used as a district prison and then remained that way until the year 1960. It is closed for public viewing but looking at it from outside, you can get a glimpse of its stunning architecture.
