This was a great place to spend an afternoon in Tokyo. I bought the ticket for general admission (not including any of the special exhibits) for about 500 yen. The main collection is on 3 floors and curated in an intelligent way, blending new & old modern art from many different mediums. I particularly enjoyed the woodblock and painted screens which were lovely. For the price and the size, the collection is relatively robust and you could spend 2-5 hours enjoying.
It was a great experience. Saw the entire museum--and I have no regrets whatsoever. I as a foreigner realized what was going on in the 60's till today. Some pictures will haunt me and others inspired me.
Had a few days to spend in Tokyo and this was definitely one of the highlights. It was quiet which was very nice after all the tourist crowded locations. Also nice to feel like you're learning about the culture and history rather than purely taking photos of shrines and temples. Recommend an afternoon here.
Location is fabulous. I for one am not a fan of modern art. Probably because I don't get it. The locality is great. They have a utterly ridiculous museum shop but a nice coffee shop. Staff is polite. Go on a "free" Sunday.
Had some extremely fun and awesome exhibitions! Tons to see. All the exhibits took several hours to get through and only cost about 10.
