This seaside commune, close to Toulon, is popular with windsurfers, who frequent the excellent Almanarre Beach. But there is another reason it is famous for. In 1944, the body of an unknown man was found washed up here; in 1998, a bracelet was found in the sea south of Marseille; and in 2000, a crashed P-38 Lightning aircraft was found near Marseille too. It is suspected that the body was of Antoine de Saint Exupery, author of the world famous children’s novel, The Little Prince. The theory says it’s not impossible for the body to have carried 80 km from Marseille by the tides.
At any rate, the view is wonderful, and beach has a lovely cycling track.
