Situated inside the premises of the Chapel of St John, St Martin’s Museum has some beautiful exhibits that showcase the major events of the life and legends of Saint Martin. The museum was erected in the year 1990 by the joint initiative of the Tours city and the Association of Friends of the Charlemagne Tower. The museum contains the following highlights:

Relics conserved from the consecutive demolitions of the various basilicas built over the tomb of St Martin such as:

  • Fragments of St Martin’s grave
  • Precious frescoes from the Charlemagne Tower dating back to the 11th century.
  • Ornaments and other heirlooms that reflect the magnificence of the bygone architecture.
  • Replicas of numerous manuscripts and stained glass windows.
  • Murals, sculptures and artefacts showcasing the historical legacy of the life of St Martin and the influence of his pilgrimage.

For history buffs, there is an excellent way to know more about the life of St Martin. The St Martin Museum is the starting point of multiple routes and people can travel through the city of Tours to discover interesting facts and facets of Saint Martin’s heritage.

  • St Martin Museum has been closed for a year for a major redevelopment program. It will be open to the public again in the year 2016 in a new setting in order to commemorate the 1700 birth anniversary of Saint Martin. Hence it is advised to not make a trip to this museum as a part of your itinerary this year.
