The Roman Amphitheatre in Trier is situated beyond the medieval City Wall. True to its Roman tradition, the amphitheatre served as an entertainment space for people who would come to look at the combats between animals and gladiators. As you enter the theatre, you will see the ruins of its entrance gate and protecting walls. Underneath, you would be able to see a vast cellar where the prisoners were sentenced to death in the Roman times.

Today, with its good quality acoustics, the amphitheatre serves as a venue for the Antiquity festival in Trier as well as for open-air concerts.

  • Old Roman amphitheatre close to the center of the city. Once you get a ticket, you can wander around the place and read about the history while enjoying the building skills of the Romans, or what's left of it after medieval times reused some of the stonework for other projects. Worth a look

  • The idea that this is still standing from around 700 AD is incredible!

  • Well maintained and presented historical site. I come from an area of the UK named ‘roman country’ and enjoyed the amphitheater very much. Doesn’t cost much to enter either!

  • Great place, gives you a sense of how roman times were. I'm not into the Romans but I did enjoy the visit. Well worth the visit

  • The site is an impressive memorial of Roman times of Trier and with the handful of other major monuments on the city definitely a must see. Access to the site visits of free parking and an eight Euro entrance fee for families. I think Trier could do a better job of bringing the history to live by first trying to explain better how the theater was possibly used and second providing the overall perspective of Trier in Roman times. We could've learned lot more than we did.
