Also lovingly called Trinco, the city of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka is one of the world’s best deep harbours. This port city is located on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, some 270 kilometres from the capital city of Colombo. 2. Koneswaram Temple

4. Fort Frederick

Also called as Trincomalee Fort or Fort of Triquillimale, Fort Fredrick is a Portuguese fort. Built for the purposes of defence, this fort is located on the neck of a narrow peninsula. A popular attraction in this area, the place offers lovely views of the bay as you make your way to the top. The Hindu temple Koneswaram is located inside the fort. This fort is now managed by the Sri Lankan Army. 

5. Sri Pathrakali Amman Temple

The Pathirakali Amman Temple is a beautiful Hindu temple in Trincomalee that is dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali, one of the many forms of the goddess Kali Amman. The temple is built in using the Dravidian style of architecture and the use of many colours makes this place look absolutely magical. All walls and the ceiling are painted with figures of animals, people, and many Hindu Gods. The temple is extremely sacred, clean, and huge with plenty of greenery around. 

6. Uppuveli

Uppuveli is a stunning coastal resort town located just outside of Trincomalee. A relaxing town, this place has a beautiful beach, and many restaurants and cafes that serve fresh seafood. At the north end of the beach is a beautiful lagoon where you can spend some time watching the fishing boats come in and go.  

7. Seruwila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara

The Seruwila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple in Trincomalee. This temple is considered as one of the sixteen holiest Buddhist shrines (Solomathana) in Sri Lanka and often is visited by many Buddhists. This temple was built by King Kavantissa in 2nd Century BC when his kingdom was threatened by many foreign invaders making this one of the oldest and most important temples in the country. This temple can be reached by both road and sea. 

8. Hoods Tower Museum

This beautiful Naval museum of the Sri Lanka Navy is located at Ostenburg, in the Trincomalee peninsula on a high ridge that overlooks the ocean. This tower was once upon a time used as a guard point to carry out commands given by the Regional Commander of the British Royal Navy in India, this museum is named after Admiral Sir Samuel Hood. Once here, apart from its great collection, the visitors can also enjoy panoramic view of the Trincomalee harbour. 

9. Sri Lanka Navy Museum

Also called The Maritime and Naval History Museum, the Sri Lanka Navy Museum is located close to Fort Fredrick. Recently opened in 2013, this museum was inaugurated by the then president of the, Mahinda Rajapaksa. Displaying the country’s maritime history, marine biodiversity and information of the history of the local Naval affairs through its many artefacts and displays, this museum is one of the top things to do in Trincomalee. 

10. Arisimale Beach

About 50 kilometres from Trincomalee in the town of Pulmude, the Arisimale Beach is famed for its sand that looks like rice. The beach is unspoilt and best visited during sunset.
