Mount Adams has several inactive lava tubes some of which were created 20,000 years ago. One of them is the Guler Ice Caves which is the area’s main tourist cave and visitors from far and wide visit mainly for the Crystal Grotto. Temperatures can be close to freezing and magnificent displays of varied formations of ice as the melting snow drips from the above chamber is a sight to behold. Near the very entrance of the cave, there’s an interpretive sign which lists the cave’s detailed map. Most of the visitors here at Guler Ice Caves descend the ladder near the entrance pit and from there visit the Crystal Grotto. Other than that, you can explore the Crack Room, The Tube and more.

  • The cave is directly next to the parking area. The parking area has places to grill food and 1 outhouse style that is very dark inside even in full sun. You'll need warm clothing and personal lighting devices if you intend to venture past the bottom of the stairs at the cave entrance.

  • Was horrified to fine the ape caves had no apes. Might sue for false advertising. Luckily the ice caves had ice. Much better experience here than the “ape” caves.

  • Hyped up a bit caves are small. But it is a vary cool experience and right off the road.

  • Thought it would be bigger, nothing there tells u look behind the stairs for the real tour of the cave. Still a really cool place.

  • Forgot my flashlight. Whoops. This experience was a last min choice. Was a 90 degree day. Walked up to the stairway enterance it cooled down to about 40 degrees so fascinating. Very cool experience. Remember to bring a good light. The light on your phone dont cut it.
