We decided to head to Tohono Chul for breakfast at their indoor/outdoor restaurant and were not disappointed. All the meals we have there are well prepared and tasty. After the meal you can enjoy a walk in the park for a fee and enjoy an interesting botanical garden.
Loved this place, my only markdown is because some of the areas needed a little landscaping attention, and the tortoises were not there, and no sign so we looked for them lol. I will definitely be going back in the cooler season though to hike around the little trail loops and stuff. Very beautiful garden, we got to see the little owl family from the gift shop window. Neat little areas that talk about local food gardens. Will be back.
The Endowment of the Arts provides active duty military members free access to museums during the summer and Tohono Chul was a participating member. We drove from Surprise to visit some museums on the 1st of June. It was still early in the morning, so the heat was not in full swing. The park is nice and quaint. I have been to three arboretums and botanical gardens and they were much bigger and well developed, but I enjoyed the simplicity of this place. The lizards were everywhere and that was very enjoyable. The different regions within the park made for a pleasing escape. The water area was very relaxing and enjoyable. Sadly none of the tortoises were out to say hi when we visited. The flora was very diverse and numerous. We also saw many different birds in the area while visiting. The guides were very helpful and you could tell they enjoyed being a part of the park experience. The park is a nice visit, but I'd suggest going before May and after September unless you like it hot.
I went on a Sunday morning and strolled the gardens in about an hour. It was beautiful and serene. I've never been to a garden where there are signs warning you of active rattle snakes. How exciting! There's also a really wonderful shop selling a well curated selection of succulents and cactus. I really enjoyed the quilt show at the gallery as well and the cafe! It was pretty hopping for Sunday brunch but they have opened a part of the garden beyond the patio which was quiet and pleasant. The service was friendly but the croissant they served me was on the stale side and I've never been served a croissant sliced in half. The atmosphere and the coffee and the staff made up for it.
Tohono chul is an exquisite garden to visit for plants, birds, art & dining. It is a marvelous place to walk alone, or join a guided tour with a docent. The docents are knowledgeable & friendly.
