Considered to be a historic monument, the Umhlanga Lighthouse is one of the must-visit places in Umhlanga Rocks. The lighthouse was commissioned way back in 1954 and continues to signal the ships till date. Standing tall at a height of 21 meters, the lighthouse has a range of light of 24 nautical miles. The Umhlanga Lighthouse is fully automatic and has never had a keeper. Umhlanga Lighthouse gets its name from the reeds (Umhlanga = places of reeds in the Zulu language) that grows on the banks of the Ohlanga River.
