  • Scintillating at its best, we were served really well. Pleasant and so relaxing. It's located on Mihiripenne Beach, 3 kms away from Unawatuna bay. If you just want some peace in life, a minute there is enough. English breakfast by the pool, listening to sea waves was just heavenly.

  • My husband and I spent our honeymoon at three Edwards Collections properties - Frangipani Tree, Chatsworth and Hill Rise. It was worst experience I have ever had with a hotel group and it ruined my honeymoon. Whatever you do, do not stay at any of these properties. Management (which barely exists for this hotel group) is abysmal. When I initially emailed Edwards Collection I exchanged emails with Chinthaka. He was very helpful and ultimately put together an itinerary stating the 'total package cost', to stay at Frangipani Tree and Chatsworth. Chinthaka asked me to provide credit card details to put a 50% deposit on this stay. This seemed like a reasonable request to me, and I provided him with my American Express details over email. After payment had gone through I received a separate booking confirmation email from both Frangipani Tree and Chatsworth. Upon receiving these confirmations I assumed there was a mistake, as the total price was now 30% more than the quote which very clearly stated ‘total package cost’. When I asked Chinthaka about this, he stated that the additional charges ‘has nothing to do with the Hotel as we only collect it for the Government. Our charges are Exactly what I have quoted to you’. This is an outright lie. Frangipani Tree: we had the worst room in the hotel (Olive Ridley 1). All windows opened onto the common areas, so we had to keep them closed all day every day. Consequently it was always dark, depressing and slightly musty in the room. There is absolutely no way the room was worth the price including taxes – roughly US$270 per night (in fact, we don’t even know what the actual price was, as taxes were simply quoted as ‘$443.82’ and we assume this included the driver too). The room was dilapidated and in desperate need of being refreshed. The shower didn’t work properly and there was a plastic cover over the bath that was entirely broken/cracked in one corner. Not a good look for a so-called ‘five star establishment’. As the internet barely worked anywhere (this in itself is appalling) we couldn’t look up whale watching tours, so we discussed this with Minty and he organized this for us, and told us it would cost $173 for two people. Imagine our surprise when we arrived at the whale watching tour to be told that they charge $40 per person. The Frangipani rate was over double the actual price. This cannot be justified in ANY way, as we already had a driver paid for and included for our whole stay, and the so-called breakfast from Frangipani was a disgusting sandwich from a local grocery store, with the price tag and name of the supermarket still on it. What kind of luxury hotel does not prepare breakfast for their guests in house? It’s completely unacceptable. The way in which the hotel overcharged and then refused to refund us, but rather comped us a (much cheaper) dinner, was an extremely disappointing way of ‘solving’ this issue they created with their exorbitant pricing. We had a huge problem with the bill the morning we were leaving, because we were quoted in rupee when we had already paid for part of the bill in USD, and it was extremely poorly laid out. Ultimately we told the staff that we would settle the bill once at Chatsworth (the hotel in the Edwards Collection group that we were going on to), when we had received a proper explanation and itemisation. Issues with the bill continued at Chatsworth when they charged my credit card for the full stay without my consent before the end of the trip, and I only found out as I was notified by my credit card company. This is illegal. Please read my reviews for their other two properties – Chatsworth and Hill Rise and be warned not to book these terrible hotels. The whole trip was a huge disappointment thanks to Edwards Collection. Never in our lives have we experienced such a sorry state of affairs within a hotel group. I still can’t believe this series of events, one mishap after another, occurred on our honeymoon. Avoid this hotel group whatever you do.

  • We had an absolutely wonderful 4 nights at the Frangipani Tree. From arrival when we were greeted by the lovely staff and the pleasant news that we were to be upgraded from a pool view to a sea view suite until our last day. The hotel is only small with 9 or so rooms but that makes it perfect for a quiet beachside getaway. There is what amounts to a strip of private beach but do be warned as the seas are quite boisterous to say the least on the south coast of Sri Lanka and swimming is not advised. However, the beautiful pool more than made up for this. The food was excellent especially the Sri Lankan Curry which was exceptional, well balanced and layered spicing and a delight to eat. The seafood was always incredibly fresh and the seafood platter we had was perfectly cooked and delicious. The bar manager Mr Mudalige was a wonderful host and certainly added to our stay. If we are ever back in Sri Lanka we would certainly say again.

  • The down side of this hotel is the Rooms which are not as we expected for the price we paid. The rooms are run down, the bedsheets were stained, the mosquito net over the bed was stained. The whole hotel needs to be refurbished. The walls and pool area need some work in order to look nice. The up side of this hotel is certainly the food, very nice cocktail menu and nicely made drinks and cocktails. Breakfast was also great. Amazing beach front view and location. The staff were super friendly and helpful.

  • Restaurant looks nice however the service is so slow and inept that I left after 1.5 hours of waiting for my lunch. We were the only people in the restaurant for lunch.. Must be all still in holiday mode.. God help you if you go there when it is busy...
