According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19 square miles (49 km2), all land with no bay frontage. The Niles Cone aquifer, managed by the Alameda County Water District, supplies much of the water consumed by Union City. Union City is unofficially divided into 3 sections by natives to desgnate their area of the city. East End, Central District, and West Union City. Each section of town has unique characteristics and natives from each portion reflect it. East Union City or "East End" is the area from the Fremont border and Niles district to Western Ave. This neighborhood includes James Logan High School, Union Square and the Union City Police Department headquarters. Union City Station is the city's BART station and the area has received funding to build an Amtrak Station connecting with East Plaza via The Esplanade between Station Center and The Union Flats. The Bart station has received massive upgrades and has become one of the city's symbols and is known as an iconic structure in the city. Union City has been designated as The Southern Alameda County Intermodal Transit Hub. The Union City Station District Downtown is centered around the BART station and future Amtrak Station and has received over 100 million in funding from the City of Union City for redevelopment of the former Pacific States Steel Corp. property located behind the BART station. The Station District is also geographically located in the East End but retains it own official designation as The Station District. The Decoto neighborhood and historic district is located adjacent to the Station District across Decoto Rd is largely a Latino neighborhood and is considered impoverished and dangerous with a high crime rate. Shootings are common in Decoto and the natives have nicknamed the neighborhood "Dodge City" referencing wild west connotations. The Central District or "Central" is the area between Western Ave and the 880 freeway. This section includes Tom Kitayama Elementary School, Cesar Chavez Middle School, The Nakamura Clinic and a large Central Industrial District. The Central Industrial District houses many truck shipping docks and manufacturing companies. The headquarters of U.S. Pipe, American Licorice Co. and Dreyers Ice cream can be found there. West Union City or "West Une" is the area west of the 880 freeway and includes the Union Landing Entertainment District, Old Alvarado Historic District, the Alvarado neighborhood and the 9/11 Memorial located at Sugar Mill Landing Park at the intersection of Alvarado-Niles Rd and Dyer st. Westbound down Dyer St across the Union Pacific railroad tracks is the far western edge of the city the natives call "The Wastelands". This area of the city is less than 1 mile from bay wetlands and is very cold and windy in terms of Bay Area weather. Winters in the Wastelands are foggy, wet, and brutally cold. The term Wastelands is in reference to the Turk Island Dump which was located at the western end of Dyer St near the intersection of Dyer St and Union City Blvd which operated from 1962 to 1986. The Wastelands has been plagued by a high rate of armed robberies and shootings and is described as impoverished and extremely dangerous to outsiders. Natives from the Wastelands are called "Wastelanders" and are said to be very distrustful of outsiders. They are also known to have their own accent and manner of talking the natives call "Wasteland English" which they use to distinguish outsiders. Wastelanders simply say "im from Wastelands" when asked where they are from. The Contempo Homes Housing Project on Meteor Drive is known as the epicenter of the drug trade in Union City and the Tri-City region of Southern Alameda county. The development is bounded by the active railroad artery of the Union Pacific railroad tracks and is a former railroad depot that was called Hall Station. The presence of vultures in the trees overlooking the railroad tracks due to dead animals gives the housing project an ominous and dark feeling. The sprawling 682 unit 65 acre townhome development has been known for brazen armed robberies, home invasions and daylight murders. Due to the location of the Police department in the East End far from the area a lawless mentality pervails the streets of the Contempo Homes Community and the Wastelands area. High response times by law enforcement contribute to violent crime in the Wastelands. Despite efforts of the Union City Police Department to open substations at the intersection of Alvarado Blvd and Dyer St which Wastelanders call "Four Corners" and an outpost in Contempo Park the high rate of crime persists. Contempo Homes was one of the first housing projects to install Shot Spotter Technology which triangulates gunfire to a specific location along with constant video surveillance due to shootings in the housing project.
