About Red Hill, Urumqi
When it comes to symbolizing Urumqi, Red Hill is the first name that comes in mind. Made of aubergine rock which is of reddish brown in color, describes the fact as to why the name ‘Red Hill’ has been given to this piece of mountain. The hill is around 1 kilometer wide from east to west and 1.5 kilometer long. Near to this hill lies Yamalike Hill. The myth says that both the hills were together and it is the body of a red dragon that once fled from the Heavenly Lake. At that time, the Heavenly Empress cut off the dragon into two pieces where one piece turned into Red Hill on the east side and Yamalike Hill on the west side. The sword is said to have turned into the Urumqi River. While topographical fact says, both the hills were together and got separated because of stratum rupture. However, when in 1786, flood hit Urumqi, it was predicted that the hills might come closer leading the river to flood the city. In order to prevent the situation, two Zhen Long Pagodas were built on both the hills.
Today, surrounding the pagoda is a large park, named Red Mountain Park has been built. The park always remains filled with visitors and entertainers performing for the tourists. From the park, you get the best aerial view of the city.
