Dating back to the 16th century, the Lehripura Gate is the historic western gate of the old city of Vadodara. Built near the Nyay mandir, this particular gate is another architectural marvel in Vadodara. It was in the early 16th century that Mehmud Begda died and handed the reign of the city to his son Khalil Khan who constructed this fortress wall and named it Kila-e-Daulatabad. He later changed the name to Lehripura Gate. What is fascinating about the gate is that even today its construction and appeal has remained unchanged.
The gate has three arches and combines Persian, Gujarati and Marwari style of architecture and design. You can find beautiful carvings of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Kali between the three arches along with windows that would be used as lookout points in the old days for the defence of the city. Currently, the gateway merges with the city market and after dark, its basks in the warm glow of the street lights- reliving its past charm in the current city of Vadodara. Take a walk around the market area to see the gate still standing in all its grandeur and don’t forget to take a few pictures here during your visit!
