Derived from the Baroda College that was established in 1881, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda replaced the old institution in 1949 and is one of the oldest educational centers in western India. The Alumni of the college include renowned people like Dr. I. G. Patel, Dr. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Bharat Ratna Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Shri Aurobindo, Gyanpith awardee Shri Rajendra Shah, Shri Sam Pitroda, Prof. K. G. Subramanyan, and Lord Bhikhu Parekh among other stalwarts.

Currently, the university covers an astounding 275 acres and has 14 faculties including Commerce, Arts, Psychology and Education, Journalism, Management Studies, Law, Performing Arts,  Fine Arts, Science, Pharmacy, Technology, Engineering and also fashion technology and design. They also have a Ph.D. programme and promote research. The architecture of the university is one of its highlights for visitors. The old building with the main dome surrounded by smaller domes, high arched design with classic brick construction and embellishments of Jaali work windows and balconies, create an old-world ambiance. Evening’s bask the entire building with warm lights when the rustic university becomes more of a  visual treat than an educational center and if you love historic places, a walk there will be something you simply must not miss!
