Built in 1870 by Maharaja Khende Rao, the Malkapura palace stands out from the other palaces in the city because of its grand Italian design and architecture. The stately building with stunning arches and beautiful construction grabs your attention straight away.
The palace was built as a summer residence for the royal Gaekwad family and was also used as a hunting resort where Maharaja Khanderao Gaekwad II would hunt at the nearby deer park.
Walk towards the palace and you see a 3 storey building with an adjoining Japanese garden that covers around 170 acres of area. The king’s brother Malharrao Gaekwad destroyed a part of the palace in the 1870’s but the palace was extended in 1883 to make room for its current 100 rooms! The garden itself was designed by William Goldring and has a swimming pool that once was home to beautiful swans. Currently, the palace is used as a training centre for the Indian Air Force.
