Located on MG road close to the bustling Choksi Bazaar, the Mandvi Gate has become a landmark for the people of Vadodara. The Gate was built by Sultan Muzaffar during the Mughal period (in the early 16th century). The gate is located on the intersection of the four roads that lead to the 4 gates of the old walled city.
In the past, this gate was used to collect toll from merchants who would come to Vadodara for trading and for making important public announcements since it formed the heart of the busy city. Originally, the gate only had the ground floor. Ganpatrao Gaekwad added the upper stories to the structure in 1856 AD. Today, much of its original work still remains untouched- you can find the jaali work, the watchtower and a clock that compliments its vintage look.
The gate is beautiful no matter when you visit it but during festivals, it truly is at is best with lights that decorate its silhouette and the buzz around the place that welcome those passing by.
