The Nazarbaug Palace was built in 1721 by the royal family as a place of residence. It is by far the oldest palace in Baroda and was used as a venue for major celebrations as well. The “Shish Mahal” or “glass palace” is a highlight of the palace.
In the past, the palace had a collection of solid gold and silver guns, precious gemstones, priceless Japanese, Chinese and Roman art and an impeccable collection of paintings by famous international artists. The famous “Star of the South” diamond that weighed 125 carats, was kept here as well. Over time, the place was robbed and most of its treasured collection was stolen. For a long time, the palace stayed in ruins after the robbery until recently when the building was converted to a mall.
For architecture lovers, the palace still holds a hint of the glamour and grandeur of the years gone by. The mall itself maintains much of the original structure and provides a good option for avid shoppers.
