Of all the heritage buildings and structures in Vadodara, the Vidyadhar ni Vav remains as one of the most forgetten attractions in the city. Vidyadhar Vav is a step-well that was built in the 16th century during the reign of Sultan Mehmud Begada. The historic treasure is very easy to miss since the neighbouring shops do hide it in plain sight but if you can spot the place, you are welcomed into a time capsule that has mesmerising art mixed with technology that was far beyond its time! The entrance gate has two tigers and elephants carved on one either side while the beautiful murals and carvings that depict the stories of mythology and even war, complete the design of the well. Walk around to see beautifully carved Jharokas (decorative windows), detailed carvings prominently seen on the columns, the overheard stone vaults and the sheer symmetry that you can see throughout the well. The step-well goes 7 storeys underground and uses a combination of stone and brick construction to support its frame. You can still find inscriptions in Devnagri etched on the stone as well.

The Vidyadhar ni Vav was built in dedication to a spiritual leader (guru) who died in Sevasi village. Story goes that the well was used to sacrifice young girls decked in gold jewellery and rich clothes on full moon nights while others say this was merely used to store rain water. Either ways, the place does have a rather haunting look about it and for that sheer experience itself, a walk here will be nothing less than memorable!
