Yaletown Brewing Co & Restaurant, Vancouver Reviews
Had a great time here on a slow Tuesday night. The bartender spent a bunch of time explaining what all they distill and helping us pick cocktails, even pouring us mini-shots of several of their gin varieties so we could compare. I left a good tip (it was well deserved), and he caught us at the door and demanded we all do a shot of one of the few things we hadn't yet tried. Tons of fun.
Dined here twice. Once with family and friends, the second time by myself. On both occasions, the atmosphere and service were excellent (the playlist was was my kind of music, a big plus). Started the evening with a couple of gin & tonics (house gin) to slide comfortably into the menu. The food was very enjoyable and combined with the atmosphere, made for a very relaxing and pleasurable evening. Also, next to the distillery is a shop for off sales of the different spirits they make.
My wife and I went to the tasting room a few days ago and what an awkward experience that was. We walked in to a guy sipping his coffee beside the counter to the right. I walked up to the bar to look at the spirits they had to offer while the individual continued sipping his coffee and after a couple of minutes he came around the bar and stood there silently before I finally had to ask if I could try some spirits. I tried the cucumber gin and the tequila barrel aged gin. He poured tasters for me and continued to stand behind the bar silently. No description of what he poured me, no history on the distillery, no pleasant banter, nothing. It was pretty awkward. I quite enjoyed the cucumber gin but the tequila aged gin just wasnt for me. I might have been convinced to buy a bottle of the cucumber gin but considering the silent stoic figure behind the bar I figured they must hate sales and I would save my money for another distillery in town. I would rate the experience in the tasting room a 0 out of 5 and the spirits I tried a 3.5 out of 5.
The ambience is nice but if the weather isn't warm and you want to stay warm, stay clear of the balcony and tables just inside the door from the balcony, as it can be very cold. The food is ok and perhaps would seem better if the restaurant was warmer. We had an appetizer delivered cold instead piping hot and staff didn't ask about it, even though it was plainly obvious it was not being touched. If the weather is hot, I think this place would be decent but this is the third time the temperature has been an issue and we'll likely just go to earls next time we're in the area.
Fantastic place. Portions a little smaller than I would have liked but taste more than made up for it. Try the chickpea fries. Yes, they exist and yes, I have no idea why other restautants don't serve them. You're welcome!
