It is believed that temple has been built on the very spot where Tulsidas had a vision of Hanuman. He was a Hindu poet-saint, reformer and philosopher. Tradition states that regular visits to this temple will appease Lord Hanuman. Every Tuesday and Saturday thousands of devotees queue to the temple to offer prayers. Mythology tells us how Lord Hanuman engulfed the Sun in his mouth thus humbling all the gods. The angels and gods started worshipping him for the Sun’s release. Some astrologers believe that revering Lord Hanuman will defuse the ill effects of the planet Mars as well.

The presence of monkeys inside the premises makes this temple more ethereal. The temple was constructed by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of BHU. The Hanuman Jayanti, which is the birthday of Lord Hanuman is celebrated here every year. They organise a special Shobha Yatra, which is a parade from Durga temple to the Sankat Mochan Temple. The devotees put sindoor on the statue and offer laddoos to Lord Hanuman. Sindoor is a red pigment made from powdered red lead and applied as a dot on the forehead. Laddoo is an Indian sweet made from a mixture of flour, sugar, and shortening, and shaped into a ball. They have several aartis of which the most famous is Pratah Aarti, which takes place at dawn. The Sandyha Aarti is an evening prayer and the Rathri Aarti is performed at night.

The Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh takes place every year in the month of April. It is a classical music and dance concert celebration. In this celebration, great musicians and performers from all across the India come to take part. This event started 88 years ago. In the 2009, the vocalist Pandit Jasraj and Kathak model Pandit Birju Maharaj took part in the celebration.
