The museum opened for the public in 1985 and is maintained by the state government. It was built to house some ancient artefacts that date back to a couple of centuries in an effort to preserve the historicity of the erstwhile dynasties that ruled the region.
The artefacts on display include ancient art, archaeology, weapons, sculptures and handicrafts among other historically significant items. A gallery dedicated to the depiction of historical monuments is among the highlights of the museum. The ivory chess board in the museum is quite fascinating and is quite similar to the one featured in the first ‘Harry Potter’ film.
It is important to note that the museum also supports and encourages art among students through educational initiatives and programmes like the annual art camp for school children and iconography classes for college-goers.
