They decided to build this Baroque church when the prayers against’ the plague were apparently heard and delivered. It took nearly half a century to build, but at the end of it, they had one of the largest churches in the city, and is considered a minor-basilica. Highlights include:

  • Marian symbolism
  • Baroque high altar
  • Tintoretto’s Marriage at Cana
  • A number of great works by Titian, including altarpiece and ceiling paintings.
  • The statues of the four evangelists on the façade.

The church plays a prominent role in the Festa della Madonna della Salute (annual Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin on 22nd November). It’s also played an important role in the minds of the painters who painted the Venice skyline. It’s elegance leads to being often being preferred to any other church as Venice’s most beautiful.

  • Beautiful church with a circular shape! The architecture of this church is very interesting. The altar is very beautiful with many amazing sacred images. There is a great chandelier in the center of the church. The facade is wonderful and the surroundings are fantastic. This is one of the unmissable attractions of the city.

  • It's beautiful inside and impressive from outside. Absolutly makes a great picture and location across to the Doges Palace offers you a magnificent view. I believe it is one of the largest church in Venice. Place is full of history and visitors.

  • The basilica was really gorgeous, it was calm and peaceful inside. The organ was being played and it was so immersive. It’s really big and gorgeous from the outside.

  • Nice original architecture. Short visit, free admission. Yep, free. When I visited, someone was playing the organ live. Easy to find, just off the boat stop of the same name. You can make it a stop before or after St-Mark's Place.

  • Great basilica! Free entrance, so do not hesitate! Everyday at 3:30pm is an organ concert (30min)!
