I’d say this was a quiet treasure, but it’s way too big and way too beautiful for me to do so. The 16th century white marble renaissance church is very prominent from Giudecca Island. It was built in thanks for saving Venice from an outbreak of plague that killed off 46000 people. Today, friars of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin live in the church. The dome of the building is topped with a statue of the Redeemer. It was built by the architect Palladio, and is considered to be one of his finest works. Paintings by Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Francesco Bassano decorate its walls. A shaky pontoon bridge leads from the Zattere to the Redentore as the city celebrates the Feast of the Redeemer, on the third Sunday of July, after a night of fantastic fireworks.
