The name refers to both the arts organisation and the prestigious festival the organisation organises. Though the actual exhibition (which is on contemporary visual arts – architecture, music, dance, cinema, theatre, and fine art) is held once every two years. The exhibition is over 100 years old, created in 1895 to celebrate the wedding anniversary of the Italian monarchs. Today, it’s one of the world leaders in recognising, developing and promoting contemporary trends, especially in art and architecture. In film, La Biennale is associated to the prestigious Venice International Film Festival, the oldest such festival in the world.
