One of Venice’s most beautiful Baroque palaces, the Labia, was built in the 18th century. The Labia family wanted to make a point of their place in Venice after having brought their way into nobility at a time when the Republic was handing out titles for money to fund their war against Ottomans.

While most palaces focus just on the main façade (the one facing the Grand Canal), this one is distinctive for having a clean Venetian Gothic Floral facade at the rear (facing Campo San Geramia), as well as carefully decorated sides. The architectural style breaks from traditional Baroque in many ways, but remains thematically rich.

However, it’s the interior that truly elevates the palace to artistic appreciation. Tiepolo frescoed the double height ballroom; the scenes all cover the romance of Marcus and Cleopatra. Trompe l'oeil effects (optical illusions) are heavily employed. The rest of the rooms are great too, but don’t hold a candle to the ballroom.

Though it went to decay in the 19th century, the palace was restored in the mid 19th century. Today the interior is open to the public only by prior appointment.
