The bridges of Venice tend to have some unique historical character; this one is famous for the fist-fight matches. It was a celebrated neighbourhood sport in which local men would gather to try and knock each other off into the waters below. Sometimes people were even killed. The practice of slugfest died out after 1705, but hey, the bridge is still here. Check out the marble footprints at the ends of the bridge – they were the starting points of the fights. Though there are other bridges in Venice known to have hosted these fights, this one is the most famous. Don’t start your fist-fight here though. It’s still outlawed.
