The stunning waterfront of Vernazza is framed by a small church which is built in Gothic-Lingurian style. Built in 1318, this beautiful church is known as Santa Magherita di Antiochia Church. You can locate the church from a distance by seeing its 40 meter tall octagonal tower that almost touches the skyline. Legend says, the bones of a finger of the hand of Santa Margherita were found in a wooden box near the shore. People staying in that region during that period decided to build a church to honor Santa where now the neighborhood islet stands. However, because of heavy storm and rough sea waves, the relic disappeared and reappeared in the same location after few days. Such instances have made the place holy for the people of Vernazza.

Great place to visit if you're in the area!
You’ll gasp audibly when entering Santa Margherita’s small yet lavish baroque church, not just at the truly dazzling array of gold leaf, frescoes, chandeliers and stained glass, but also at the sheer serendipity of it being here at all.
Beautiful, reverent place.
Muy bonita con el mármol blanco. Resalta todo lo demás. Más bonita por dentro que desde fuera
Molto imponente e ricca, anzi sfarzosa esibizione di ricchezza e potere.
