The Castel san pietro was used as a strategic viewpoint and was where Verona’s earliest settlements were established. The Romans used this spot to prevent invasions from Pepin, the King of Italy and other enemies.
Through out its history there were many fortresses built here- many of which are still seen in the ruins that surround the hill. The first fortress built here was called the Ponte Pietra. The Castle San Pietro that stands here currently was built in the 19th century and still remains to be one of the most majestic man-made buildings around the city.
Though you cannot enter the Castle, a walk around the regal building is recommended to appreciate the architecture of the building and to see the lovely skyline of Verona with its beautiful towers, roadways and buildings. You can also spot the Arena and the Ponte Scaligero from here.
