A part of the Vienna Museum, the Roman Museum was opened in 2008 to offer an insight into the history of Vienna in Roman times. It is located in Hoher Markt, a place that has got Roman origins and is Vienna’s oldest piazza. After the World War 2, certain remains of the Roman military camp of Vindobona were found underneath Hoher Markt whose artefacts have been kept on display at the Museum of Rome on the square including pottery, classical statuary, and even toys. People interested in history will especially find it to be interesting.

  • The Viennese Roman museum is really a hidden gem in my opinion. Vienna used to be an important outpost of the Roman empire and this little museum brings the past to light. My highlight is a cross section of the Viennese subsurface they show in the basement indicating how much Vienna 'rose' since back in time as the entire building debris was never removed, but Vienna was built on those remains. That's also the reason why the Roman excavation site at the Michaelerplatz is situated 3 m below today's ground surface: this used to be the ground surface back then!

  • Rather nice Museum. Interesting part of Vienna history. 1st Sunday of every month is free to visit

  • It was enough once. Very small museum, the quality was far from the best museums in Vienna. An older coworker was very rude with my 3 years old son and my wife. They wanted to change a diaper, and this guy behaved, that they are the public enemy. If he has problems with the visitors, he should looking for another job.

  • A small and interesting place. If your child likes history, he will like the interactive parts of it

  • Although a small museum compared to the ' big beasts' of international fame the Wien museum provides both a taste of Roman life in the outposts of empire and is well curated with excellent displays. The actual remains of part of the Roman fort can be found on-site in the basement.
