Winter Palace Of Prince Eugene - Review

Better known as the city Palace, Winterpalais is a structure built in high Baroque, located in the famous Inner Satdt district of Vienna. As the name suggests, this building served as the winter residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Designed and constructed by Jahann Bernhard Fischer Von Erlach between 1695 and 1700, it looks stupefying and beautiful. Later on, winter Palace was acquired through an auction by Empress Maria Theresa for her imperial court in 1738. As you enter inside, you will be struck by its Baroque facade with three elaborate portals. Due to its beautifully preserved Baroque architecture, this palace has earned the title of being one of the “most magnificent Baroque edifices in Vienna.”

  • The Winter Palace of Prince Eugene is a high-Baroque palace in the Innere Stadt district of Vienna, Austria. Located on a narrow street at Himmelpfortgasse 8, the palace was used as the winter residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, who spent his summers at the Belvedere. The Winter Palace was designed and constructed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach from 1695 to 1700, and by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt from 1702 to 1724 following his predecessor's plans. The palace was acquired through auction by Empress Maria Theresa for the imperial court in 1738, along with most of the prince's other buildings. In 1752, the palace was converted by Nicolò Pacassi into the seat of various state institutions. The palace housed the Finance Ministry of the Austrian Empire from 1848 to 1918 and the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire. Since 1919, the palace has housed the Ministry of Finance. From 2007 to 2013, the palace was extensively renovated. The Winter Palace of Prince Eugene is considered "one of the most magnificent Baroque edifices in Vienna".

  • The Ministry of Finance has returned the premises for their own use at the end of October 2017 as requested. In 2018, the palace will be the venue for the Brexit negotiations during Austria's EU Council Presidency After that, who knows?

  • It's a short but awesome visit. The rooms and displays are far more opulent than you get at the imperial residences, and the displays are an intriguing glimpse at the Polish role in preserving Vienna. An hour long diversion, if only to stare in wonder. Photos allowed!

  • It's not open to public

  • Nice location, great place with beautiful decorations. There is not many tourists there also.
