Chao Fa Ngum ruled Laos in the 14th century and was the first ruler who defined the borders of Laos, a guideline which is followed even today. Asa ruler, he made Theravada Buddhism the state religion. Today, his statue stands tall in the Fa Ngum Park which marks the western boundary of Vientiane city. This statue is the first thing you will see when you enter the city from the Wattay International Airport. This statue was built in 2003.
