Created by the famous sculptor Steinunn Thorarinsdottir, the Voyages Friendship Statue has a sister statue in Hull, England. The statue celebrates the trading relationship and history of over 100 years between Britain and Iceland through the North Atlantic Ocean. The statue was a welcome change to mend the differences that rose during the Cold War when the fishing rights in the North Atlantic Ocean were a concern for both the countries.
The statue itself depicts a human figure standing on a tall pillar. The figure leans forward towards the gorgeous black sand beach, almost eager to meet the ocean. With its beautiful meaning, today, the statue is perfect for a small pit-stop to take a picture when in Vik. The surrounding mountains and greenery adorn the sculpture and makes it a pleasant place to take a breather while sightseeing around Vik.
