Established by the Bernadine monks in 1810, you can easily consider this cemetery to be one of the oldest cemeteries present in Vilnius. What makes this cemetery worth a visit is that its area is completely enveloped with lush green vegetation that adds to its serenity. This cemetery became the victim of WWII when it was destroyed and was soon closed in 1970. However, it was re- established with the help of Lithuanian and Polish governments and today is one of the most somber yet beautiful places to visit in Vilnius. Eminent graves present here are those of university professors, scientists and painters. During Autumn, this area becomes even more beautiful as the Fall colors add a certain sense of allure to the cemetery, worth taking a stroll around.
