The Dutch have a firm love affair with their cheese. This museum and factory exhibits the history, evolution and current production methods of Dutch cheese. There are three sections to the tour:
- Museum: Located in the basement, this room explores the discovery of cheese 6000 years ago, and traditional cheese making methods through historical artefacts and photographs.
- Factory: An expert will take you through the whole sequence of steps by which tonnes of milk are daily processed into cheese of different flavours - lactic acid, curd stage, brine bath and ripening.
- Tasting: After an explanation of the ripening process, you will learn to identify between different scents, flavours and structures of cheese.
There's also a movie on cheese making that runs on a loop. The staff is super friendly. And at the end of it all, you can of course by your own cheese before you leave.

Cheese Factory Volendam, Volendam Reviews - Write a Review
The Volendam Cheese Factory is set in a spectacularly charming coastal town. The tour is a cool experience and there are a wide variety of freshly made cheeses to sample and purchase. In my tour of the Netherlands this was certainly one of the highlights! I highly recommend going to Volendam and taking the time to stroll through the cheese factory!
We were on a guided tour, enjoyed a glass of wine and tasting of various cheeses. Bought some to take back to Australia but making enquiries about how to get more. Very interesting, great cheese and friendly staff.
It's a double store front shop. One side showing a museum display of how milk was traditionally made there about 10 exhibits pieces will take all of 5 minutes to look at. The other side is the shop selling cheese, mustard, crackers and cheese slices, etc. In the basement is a 40 seater presentation area to show actual demonstration of cheese making. I saw no display stating what dates or time these demonstrations took place. It's nothing special.
Great place to visit, informative, fun and cleverly set up. Great selection of cheeses, souces and mustards at good prices.
Nice fake display but staff didn't look at us or offer a tour we didn't spend long here
