Every visiting tourist is after a while struck by a curious question - why is Volendam so famous? For all purposes and intents, it looks like any regular port town, albeit a pretty one. This museum, while exploring the evolution of Volendam into a modern town in the late 19th and early 20th century, answers that question.

There is a wonderful exhibit of Volendam art - drawings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs and postcards. There is a magnificent collection of paintings of the city by a variety of artists. Recreated rooms from another era showcase an astonishing level of detail. In another area, you'll find displays of national costumes and ornaments. The fishing exhibit also has models of boats. But everyone's favourite tends to be the cigar house, a cottage with an interior patterned with 11 million cigar bands, a unique mosaic.
