Toolesboro Indian Mounds, Wapello Reviews
The Toolesboro Indian mounds is a local historical site in eastern Iowa, along the Mississippi River. The site includes the burial grounds of local Native American cultures. The grounds are very well kept and it is easy to see two of the mounds clearly from the parking area. The site includes a very small museum building. The building is airconditioned thankfully, as we visited on a very hot day. Museum staff were welcoming and invited us to sign the guestbook. Displays in the museum cover the history of the area including excavations and items found at the site. Displays also include miniature recreations of the homes and describe the lifestyle of these people. Recreations of the mounds including detailed information about how these native people buried their dead were also included. Items of particular interest to me were items from other parts of the United States including the Gulf Coast as well as the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains that were found at the site. A display talks about the trade among different groups of people and I found it very interesting how items from so far away we're able to make their way to these people in Eastern Iowa. The staff was pleasant and overall it was a great and informational visit.
