Lawrence Halprin is the famous architect of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Memorial. The 32nd president of the USA who served four terms in office has been honoured by dividing the place into 4 symbolic rooms. Statues and paintings depicting his life and history as an American President adorn the walls. The exhibits involve several major epochs in history including the Great Depression and of course World War II.

The red stone building is unique due to the fact that it was one of the first places of interest that were made accessible by wheelchair. Given FDR’s personal life, this gesture was quite fitting and necessary. Eleanor Roosevelt’s bronze statue also enhances the place. It is a very popular tourist attraction and the memory of the beloved president still remains fresh here.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Reviews & Ratings

  • Just riveting and moving outdoor memorial to a great man. Speeches, various points in his career are depicted. Gift shop has lovely things and a highly accommodating staff who are happy to answer questions. Excellent for the highly educated Roosevelt follower, the novice and child and handicapped friendly as strollers can be pushed throughout the memorial. If it rains, bring an umbrella. A must see when in Washington DC.

  • I'm giving this one 4 stars because I visited at night and it is DARK. We tripped over things and didnt make it to see Mrs. Roosevelt because we were afraid we would get lost. The memorial is on the tidal basin - amazing views of the Washington monument, but no railing or anything so be careful walking around. Anyone with mobility issues should go during the day. Other than that lighting issue, the memorial is very nice and contains some interesting quotes. It also has restrooms, with a changing table.

  • This is one of the best place I’ve had the privilege to visit, it marks a Social Story Of President Roosevelt’s four term carrier. During each of his Inauguration Speech, President Roosevelt delivered a breathtaking statement to mark his footsteps and his agenda. Just stunning.

  • So many wonderful memorials and monuments have been added around the Mall and the Potomac! If you are up for it, walk around all the monuments around the Mall as well. A lot to see and enjoy for people of all ages and nationalities.

  • Relevant quotes that fit today's world. Take your kiddos. Spend time with them talking about the history of this Presidency/First Lady. Even though they had a flood in the pump room (no water in the Memorial), they need to pay some attention to it. General maintenance.
