The Bauhaus college of design is something Weimar is hugely proud of. Celebrating the work related to architecture, fine art and design by teachers and students, the Bauhaus Museum stands with an aura of assurance and security. The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius.

The Bauhaus Museum incredibly portrays the background, history and lasting influence of the State Bauhaus. The museum is small and minimalistic, but its glass cube structure is architecturally popular for providing an arresting spatial presence in the backdrop of a city. At the museum you will find –

  • 250 works by teachers and students of Bauhaus School.
  • Works by Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger among many.
  • An insight into the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s.
  • Lovely exhibitions of art and architecture including pottery, furniture, paintings and photos.

The Bauhaus Museum has a rich cultural and historic content. The art and designs on display make it especially special for architects and design students. Keeping in mind the quality and size of the collections, the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin is the only other better than Bauhaus Museum of Weimar.

Bauhaus-Museum Reviews & Ratings

  • History of Bauhaus is about art, craft and architecture. Three levels of displays about the philosophy, style, development history and expression in buildings, furniture and living. They should be the best about Bauhaus in the world.

  • Nice collection. Just WHY would any curator put so many paintings on one single wall and way above where they can be appreciated even if one cranes one's neck?

  • Once the landscaping around the new Bauhaus museum is finished as well, it'll be a great place to visit. Already, it is an asset to Weimar's cultural landscape. It's full of interesting and unexpected details about the history of the Bauhaus movement and not just for people interested in the architecture.

  • Don’t come! For now, as of April 2019, the Museum is utterly unprepared to receive its visitors. Waiting times are measured in hours, and that’s if you are lucky enough to come here on a day in which tickets are not sold out. Also, the outside spaces are not finished. Other that that the museum is great. It’s administration is not, unfortunately.

  • Interesting museum but quite small. I would have also expected more Bauhaus furniture classics on display
