The classical city of Weimar is home to the most beautiful buildings in the world. Where beauty and charm is concerned, the St. Jacob’s church presents itself as a natural winner. This church was one of the first to be constructed in Weimar and goes back to 1168.
Back in the medieval times, the church had served as a grain store, a burial chapel, a military church and the official church of the court. But the church is not how it used to be. It was remodelled in 1713 to its present Baroque style. The church is surrounded by the Jakobskirchhof – a historical burial ground. With its high altar, lovely furnishings and gorgeous glass windows, the church’s interior is a sight to behold.
The St. Jacob’s Church is known for the marriage of Johann Wolfgang Goethe to Christiane Vulpius which took place surrounded by its holy walls.
The church holds beautiful organ recitals in the evening.
