Another institution of Klassik Stiftung, The Goethe National Museum includes Goethe’s Residence and Goethe Museum. The beautiful building has carefully recorded every detail related to the celebrated poet, Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s life. With a history dating back to 1885, it is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Weimar.

The Museum largely comprises of Goethe’s private collection of art and natural sciences. It consists of:

  • Goethe’s personal library
  • 2,000 drawings made by Goethe himself
  • 100,000 exhibits focusing on Weimar Classicism
  • The Cabinet of Natural Sciences
  • The Graphic Art Collections of the Klassik Stiftung
  • The exhibition Flood of Life – Storm of Deeds

Goethe’s charming and captivating home too became a part of the Museum’s trusteeship after the death of his last grandson. Visitors can now walk through the same halls that Goethe did and have a closer look at his life, his work. The house wonderfully represents Goethe. Its 18 accessible and authentically furnished rooms consist of his personal souvenirs including hand drawings, paintings, medals, bronzes, sculptures and coins.

  • Extremely worth it! Wonderful house and very well detailed museum. Purchase one ticket for both places.

  • Very nice museum and original historic house, many tidy rooms and original elegant fornitures. The garden is wide and quiet even if it is the center of Weimar. (here you should know a little Deutsch) Credit cards accepted

  • I love Goethe so I can say that is really amazing. The firts thing to see is the house then you must see the museum with a big exhibition of the writer's life, his opera and some of his nature collection. He was one of the biggest genius in the world!

  • A really great insight into the life of Goethe. His home is kept as close as possible to the way it was when he died and a very thorough (free) audio guide helps putting it all into perspective.

  • Great exhibition and audio guides! Very well kept museum and nice personnel. Quite informative on Goethe's life.
