Like many other institutions of Klassik Stifftung, the Schloss Belvedere too belongs to the time when Baroque style of art developed. The architecture, sculpture and various paintings of the castle ignites exuberance in all its visitors. The spectacular castle was built in 1724.

Located at the outskirts of Weimar, the castle was built as a summer house for the Ernst August, Duke of Saxe-Weimar. At Schloss Belvedere you can explore –

  • The 43 hectares of Parkland surrounding the estate which includes an orangery, a pleasure garden and a labyrinth.
  • The castle stables.
  • A museum within the castle.

The museum in itself is a fascination. The various exhibits and collections of the museum include –

  • Court accessories, French and German furniture dating back to 18th century.
  • Oriental porcelain and Thuringian earthenware belonging to the ducal household.
  • Portraits and sculptures of the owners of the estate.
  • Products from the Royal Porcelain factory in Berlin.
  • Weapons of the ducal family portraying history of court hunting.
  • An exhibition giving insight into the architecture and gardens during Duke Ernst Augusts’ era.

The romantic orangery and pleasure gardens are an exquisite sight and are lovelier than the estate itself.

Schloss Belvedere, Weimar Reviews - Write a Review

  • Very nice and elegant place, gardens are wonderful. It's always a pleasure sitting or walking around this historic castle. Museum inside wide and well organized. To visit all the areas you'll take half a day. (a little Deutsch is required)

  • A small "castle"( Italians would call it villa). Quite unfriendly staff , no credit card accepted. The visit is fine, it depends what you compare with. There's not much left from it's time of glory. Plenty of porcelain and a few family paintings of a rather ugly family. Not a good place to visit with children. I don't feel it was worth the visit and the mood was not improved the adjoining restaurant which was an insult to any standard of service and had bad food.

  • The Baroque Schloss Belvedere, Weimar on the outskirts of Weimar is a pleasure-house built for house-parties, built in 1724-1732 to designs of Johann August Richter and Gottfried Heinrich Krohne for Ernst August Duke os Sax Weimar.Today it houses part of the art collections of Weimar, with porcelains and faience, furniture and paintings of the eighteenth century.

  • All is relative, but I don't recommend this place for the following reasons : 1) The palace is neat, but hardly any furniture from its time is left 2) you should think of it as a museum of a few objects from the 19 th and 18 th century. Mainly porcelain. And a few paintings of its owner's 3) it is not a good place to visit with small children, and we are visiting an average of 25 castles a year wth our kids, so we have the frame of reference and they love castles. Think if this small palace as a large house filled with fragile things too accessible for kids. 4)only the main house was open for visiting when we came end of July 2017, 5) the tickets are about Eur6,50, for seniors as adults, high price for what you see. Includes audio guide French English and German 6) YOU CAN'T PAY WITH A CARD so think of that before you go all the way here. 7) the worse of the trip was the castles restaurant THE RUDEST PEOPLE WE HAVE MET THIS SUMMER , they actually REFUSED to heat our baby food !!! Believe it or not, so far this has never happened to us anywhere in the world ( where microwave was available) which we travel extensively. 8) I gave this 2 stars only for the neat park. 9) the AVERAGE age here is 70 10) there was an awful temporary exposition, all in German , but we had the impression it was about mixed cultures. I don't recommend this place, so many nicer and friendlier places to see.

  • Schloss Belvedere is one of the most beautiful castles in and around Weimar. Especially the gardens and parks around it are absolutely splendid. They become truly magical when being visited in the evening or at night. Visiting this place has been one of the most inspiring moments in my life.
