Weta Cave, Wellington Reviews - Write a Review
Cool to see some of the models and sets from the various Weta Digital projects! Access is very good in and around the building. It is also on a main bus route so if you do not have a car it is easy to get there. Entry here is free unless you wish to pay to go on one of the other tours.
Since we were on a road trip around New Zealand inspired by the Lord of the Rings, it became clear early on that the Weta Workshop Tour and Weta Cave had to be on our list. Luckily (if you can call it that), the day coincided with our one day of rain in Wellington. The Workshop Tour was great. It was brilliant to see and hold the props, understand the processes, manufacturing, tricks used, etc. Thoroughly enjoyable!
If you like film, you'll enjoy the behind the scenes look at how some things are done. The list of movies Weta has been involved in is much bigger than I anticipated, and I have been watching them again with a new appreciation for what is going on to create them. The tour guide was wonderful and knowledgeable, and I even got a solo tour of the miniatures sets. The gift shop was full of great stuff too.
Tour was great! Lead by someone who actually works in the studio and had interesting info to share. Rooms where you can touch the props and take pics. Reasonably priced. Learned a lot. Recommended!
If you ever wondered how did they do that and how did they build that. For those who have never walked on set or worked in the industry this is a great little tour to take the family / friends when visiting Wellington New Zealand. Great props and back ground information for all those Lord of the Rings fans along with models from other movies that Weta Workshop have done amazing work on. Check out their Gallipoli exhibition Te Papa Museum Wellington, it is mind blowing work.
