Situated in Lake Champlain just outside Plattsburgh Bay, Crab Island is a 40-acre limestone island. Fossilized crab shells, trilobites, and other fossils can be found all along the island's shoreline. Site of the Battle of Plattsburgh, a 50-foot granite obelisk, known as the Crab Island Soldiers and Sailors Monument is present on this island to commemorate the martyrs. There are many other sites on this island that include the flagpole, the caretaker’s cottage and outbuildings, the pump house, the gun battery, and the quarry. The gentle breeze from the waters carrying the scent of surrounding woods is something one has to experience for oneself. However, do be aware of the richly growing poisonous ivy at the island.
