Burrishoole Abbey is a 15th century friary founded in 1470 by Richard de Burgo of Turlough. The abbey was built without the permission of the Pope. However in 1486, the Pope instructed the Archbishop of Tuam to forgive the friars. In timeRichard de Burgoresigned his lordship in 1469 and entered the friary where he died after 4 years.

The abbey has survived a lot of brutality in its days. In the 1600s, the intrusion of English soldiers in the abbey and their acts of brutality with 2 nuns still echoes through the ruins. Today, the abbey is a star attraction to anyone who visits Westport and is a reminder of Ireland’s legacy.

From a distance, the Burrishoole Abbey looks like a movie set placed among the most picturesque landscape. The striking stone architecture with a water body flowing by is sure to make your heart skip a beat. The surrounding cemetery adds to the abbey’s historic reverb.

Tourists love to visit the place for its intense ambience of the time gone by. A must- visit, the abbey promises to give you a memory that will remain forever.
