The Tintern Abbey is a Cisterian abbey that was founded circa 1200 by the Earl of Pembroke William Marshal. What you see now are the remains of the original abbey that was adapted to fit into various roles over the centuries; the nave, chancel, tower, chapel and cloister still remain. Eventually the abbey shifted into the hands of the Colclough family. Even though there isn’t much left of the building’s original glory, it is still representative of the evolution of religion over the years. Don’t forget to explore the charming stone bridge over the river too. Walk around the grounds for a delightful break from everyday routine.
