The San Andres National Wildlife Refuge nestled in the southern part of the San Andres Mountains acquires a part of Chihuahuan Desert and has a diverse landscape varying from Pinyon Pine and juniper woodlands to desert grasslands, creosotes to seasonal wetlands. This nature reserve is home to over one 172 species of birds including the elusive Hummingbirds of five species and hence, offers a great opportunity for birding. The park has been a safe haven for introducing and conserving the Oryx and the Desert Bighorn Sheep. Apart from these, you can sight mule deer, black bear and mountain lions. There is abundance of willow, cottonwood and ash trees that have their best grandeur during the fall season.
