The Kansas African American Museum is housed in the Calvary Baptist Church that was built in 1917. The church formed the focal point for the African American community in Kansas. This community included restaurants, homes and business that became a central melting pot for jazz artists, African- American baseball stars and other iconic personalities. Throughout its history, the community faced racial injustice and segregation along with a rather adverse time. Today, the museum celebrates the people who swam against the tide and made the community not just proud but also gave it its equal position in the society.

The museum has a collection of exhibits dedicated to famous people including former US president Barack Obama, exclusive art made by the community, priceless historic artefacts including sculptures and art pieces. The  place also arranges TKAAM field trips, a number of events and also hosts a number of trending exhibits. When here, don’t forget to explore the history trail that covers important historic landmarks including Nicodemus, the Brown vs.Board National Park, the African American Township,the John Ritchie House, the Richard Allen House, home of a Buffalo Soldier and Langston Hughes, the home of Gordon Parks, an undergroundrailroad, a memorial park in Oswatomie and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The gift shop is perfect to buy a few souvenirs and unique gifts before you leave the museum.
